When people talks about visionary leadership and siting Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, as an example, i usually get stunned at it. I was watching 'N.T.A live' programme, anchored by Cyril Stobber, on October 1, 2015. i hard one of his guest, although he is from the North using Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, as one of the visionary leader Nigeria has had. The question you need to ask yourself is this, was Tafawa Balawe, the man who before the independent had quoted on some of these in favour of his people (North) rather than seeing everybody as one read below:
When he was interviewed on television by BBC, he was asked whether his 'Northernization policy' would be a temporary or permanent feature. His response was this-
"In actual fact the policy is a Northerner first. If you cannot get a Northerner then you get an expatrriate like youself on contract.
If we cannot get that then we will employ another Nigerian from the South on contract too. This is going to be a permanent policy as far as i foresee.
OR
Is it his co-Northerner, Ahmadu Bello, who also had this dirty statement as well against the South in 1957. Read bellow...
'We the people of the north will continue our stated intention to conquer the south and to dip koran in the Atlantic Ocean after the british leave our shoves'
"we do not want our southern neighbors to interfere in our development. We have never associated ourselves with the activities of these people. we do not know them, we do not recognize them, and we share no responsibility in their actions. we shall demand our rights when the time is ripe. if the British quit Nigeria now at this stage, the northern people would continue their uninterrupted conquest to the sea.
of course this statement was captured in January 1947 on the floor of the Northern House of Assembly. Was he the type/example of that visionary leader they mean? Unless, if they regarded him as the Northern Visionary Leader, that is in the North, then we will now agree with them. But visionary leader for the entire country? 'NO'.
These Northern elders had earlier divided this country with their hatred and tribalistic statement. If you now hear or see some region in the country threatening to secede, you dont have to blame them on account of thiws.
If you talking/thinking about people with the visionary leaders, then it will not be complete if the name of Nnmadi Azikiwe, Zik of Africa, is not mentioned people like Obafemi Awolowo, Odamegwu Ojukwu etc. they are the people who had wanted equity for all rather than being too tribalistic. Since, before and after the independent North has been the problem that Nigerian is having today. They having politics with power (they are born to rule) no other tribe should smell the seat/power or all of them will perish.
This sentiment was General Buhari has been carried out ever since he aspiring to become the president of Nigeria. The sentiment that forced him to stay away from council of elders meeting for 16years of PDP rules. Read one of his statement after the 2011 General Election.
"I will make this government ungovernable". This was after he contested and lost in that very election to Goodluck Jonathan.Or even Obasanjo, who said that the election of 2011 is a do or die affair. These are the insensible and violence leaders some will still come up tomorrow on the national television to say that they are our visionary leaders. May God save this country from from blood shed had been caused by these vision-less leaders.
