'Danfo' driver kills pregnant police officer who tried to arrest him

Friday, 26 February 2016

A pregnant police officer, Corporal Evelyn Ele-Amuta, has been killed by a commercial bus driver, popularly called 'Danfo driver', who ran into her while she and her team were trying to apprehend him for driving against traffic along the Ikorodu road in Lagos State.

It was gathered that Ele-Amuta, an indigene of Kogi State, who was attached to the X-Squad of Lagos State Police Command, had, in company with her colleague, on February 6, flagged down the errant driver for flouting traffic laws and as they told him to come down from his vehicle, he put the vehicle into reverse and in a bid to escape, hit Ele-Amuta before making good his get away.

It was gathered that her colleagues rushed her to a nearby hospital but the doctors on duty refused to attend to her without a police report and even the intervention of the Officer-in-Charge of X-Squad, who witnessed the incident, could not sway the hospital to attend to the pregnant officer. She gave up the ghost shortly after.
An police source narrated how the incident happened:

“They succeeded in arresting the driver, but as they were about to order him out of his vehicle, he suddenly reversed, hit Evelyn and escaped.

The OC X-Squad quickly called for help. He took her to the nearest hospital. The doctors demanded for police report before they could treat her. This was despite the fact that the OC introduced himself as a police officer. Evelyn died shortly after.”
