President Buhari said that the Nigerian economy is in its current state, which he described as disorganized due to the country’s past over-reliance on crude and rent collection system. President Muhammadu Buhari who played host to British Members of Parliament at the presidential villa, said;
“We are disorganized because we relied on mono-economic product for too long, and now that oil price is down, we have to go back to agriculture and solid minerals. Tin, columbite, cocoa, groundnut, and others, used to be the basis of our economy, but then, oil came, and everybody began to look for cheap money. Now, we need to start all over again.”
Buhari who solicited for the support of the British government said that it expects a lot from the country given our shared ties while he said that there are vast opportunities to be explored. He appealed for special consideration for the rebuilding of the North Eastern part of the country.
“we are going to rebuild Nigeria, and there are vast opportunities for Britain and us. We share very close ties, and our expectation from you is high.”
The UK Parliament delegation was led by Hon Chi Onwurah, the Nigerian-born MP for Newcastle who informed the President of the purpose of the visit as “to promote positive engagement between Nigeria and the UK, since we are stronger when we build on ties of the past.”
She said that she was interested in the Nigerian diaspora, as well as trade promotion and diversification of the Nigerian Economy.
President Buhari admitted that Nigeria is currently in a phase of development which is most unfortunate. The delegation comprised 3 Members of the British Parliament as well as the High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Paul Arkwright.
