Boko Haram Is Child’s Play: The Worst Is Yet To Come – Shettima Warns Nigeria

Alhaji Kashim Shettima, the governor of Borno state, has warned Nigerians that the country may not know peace even after the defeat of the Boko Haram insurgency. According to him, there are numerous indications that the nation may be faced with worse scenarios in the near future.

Daily Post reports that Shettima expressed his worries speaking during the visit of a team from the United Nations on Thursday, March 31. The delegation was led by its resident coordinator in Nigeria, Fatma Samoura. “Boko Haram may be an appetizer for worse things to come unless we put our thinking caps on,” he said.

Shettima said that the insurgency was a child of extreme poverty that has continued to ravage the sub-Saharan Africa especially the zone. He added there are signals everywhere to show that the world needs to pay more attention to the region in order to avert another crisis that might be worse than Boko Haram insurgency.

“The signals are there all over, the North is going to be inhabited by over 70% of Nigeria in 2050 when the nation’s population is expected to be the third largest in the world with over 400 million people.

“There has to be conceited effort from the rest of the world to handle the disaster waiting to happen,” he said. Earlier this week, former president Olusegun Obasabjo visited Shettima at the government house in Maiduguri. Obasanjo said that Nigeria’s security forces have been winning the war against insurgency which has been plaguing the country for almost six years.

He was full of joy that socio-economic activities have begun to pick up in Maiduguri after many years of the insurgency and the situation is gradually getting to normal.
