President Buhari repeated what he said 30 years ago about Nigeria.

While addressing party supporters at the grand finale of the All Progressives Congress (APC ) gubernatorial campaign rally in Benin City yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari assured Nigerians that the nation would soon get out of recession and become great again .

Buhari said , “ We are a nation of great human and natural resources , especially the youth . Please, sit down and reflect and remember what I said 30 years ago. We have no other nation like Nigeria . We must all remain and salvage it together.

“ I assure you we are going to get out of our economic doldrums . We are almost out of our insecurity problems and we are going to make Nigeria great again . We are going to be very proud of our country once again and our resources will not be for nothing ” the President added .

30 years ago, the then Military Head of State embarked on a series of reforms to rebuild the nation’ s social- political and economic systems , along the realities ofNigeria ’ s austere economic conditions.

The rebuilding included removing or cutting back the excesses in national expenditure, obliterating or removing completely , corruption from the nation ’ s social ethics, shifting from mainly public sector employment to self- employment .

Buhari also encouraged import substitution industrialisation based to a great extent on the use of local materials and he tightened importation . However, Buhari’ s bid to re- balance public finances by curbing imports led to many job losses and the closure of businesses .
