Uganda riot police deployed to break up 'Women In White' protest

Anti-riot police have just deployed at the National Theatre in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, where a group of about 30 women had gathered for a protest.

They were intending to match to parliament to protest against a bill that seeks to amend the constitution to remove the age limit for judges, which currently stands at 75.

Protesters are worried that MPs lifting the age limit for judges could start the country down a path leading to lifting of an age limit for the presidency.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who is 72 and has led the country since 1986, would not be allowed to run for a sixth term in 2021 under current rules.

Several trucks carrying heavily armed policemen surrounded the premises this morning.

The women, who had dressed in white to show the peaceful nature of their protest, were then bundled into a police truck and taken away.
