Angry Mob sets ablaze 2 suspected phone snatchers
Two men suspected to be handset snatchers were burnt to death by a mob recently in Mararaba, near Abuja.
Witnesses said one of the suspects allegedly snatched a handset from someone around Abacha Road and took to his heels.
City News gathered that while residents of the area who witnessed the incident chased him, he ran and mounted a waiting ‘Okada’ and tried to escape.
But luck ran out on him as he and the cyclist were apprehended at Sharp Corner U-turn where there was traffic hold up.
Another witness who was relaxing at a joint near the scene said: “I was seated with a friend when I saw people gathering and the next thing I saw was a fire blazing.”
He said the two suspected thieves were burnt to death around 8.00p.m. and their corpses were later evacuated by the police.
Some of the witnesses were not sure if the Okada rider was an accomplice.
While some said the ‘Okada’ rider was waiting for passengers when the suspect boarded his bike, others maintained that he was standing by as a member of the team to zoom away with them to safety after the operation.
A brother to the ‘Okada’ man who would not want to be named lamented that his younger brother was a victim and maintained that the boy was never involved in any criminal activity.
The police declined not speak on the incident at the ‘A’ Division Police Station in Mararaba when our reporter went there but a source who pleaded anonymity confirmed it and warned people to desist from taking laws into their hands.
