South East Senators to visit Nnamdi Kanu at Kuje Prison
The Senators from the South East have resolved to visit detained Radio Biafra director, Nnamdi Kanu in prison, Naij reports.
Kanu, 46, is currently being detained at the famous Kuje prison, located in the suburbs of Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja.
Recall that the Senators last week visits President Muhammadu Buhari in Aso Villa concerning the issues of South East and that of Biafra.
Among the issues discussed were:
1. The rejected $29.9 loan request of the president by the Nigerian Senate
2. Nnamdi Kanu’s detention
3. Rehabilitation of federal roads in the South east
4. Commencement of the 2nd River Niger
5. Appointment of Igbos in the National Security Council
6. Construction of a standard rail gauge from Agbor to Onitsha
7. Address the issues of kidnapping and Fulani herdsmen violence
8. Establishment of a dry port in Abia, Anambra and Enugu states
9. Construction of extra River Basin Development Authority for the Southeast and
10. Rehabilitation of the Enugu International Airport. “Of particular interest to the senators is the detention of Kanu.
Sequel to their visit, the senators told the president in clear terms that his continued detention of Kanu will only aggravate the security situation in the South east.
“Even as they made a case for him, the senators also decided to visit Kanu in prison in order to caution him against unguarded utterances and urge him to call his supporters to order.
“The distinguished senators feel they owe it as a duty to the region to ensure his release, especially because they are aware of Kanu’s rising popularity in Igbo land. ”
It is not clear whether President Buhari will heed to the demands of the senators, but the government seems desperate to get a loan of $30 billion they requested from the senate.
“The government is desperate at this point and will likely meet at least their key demands,” a government source toldNaij.
All South east senators voted against the president’s attempt to get the loan except Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu representing Imo North Senatorial District. Uwajumogu is the only All Progressives Congress (APC) senator from the South east. He was absent from the Aso Rock parley.
Meanwhile, Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in Lagos in October 2015 by federal government agents and has been held in prison since then despite various court orders that ruled for his release.
