Five persons feared dead in stampede as residents struggle for N500 alms in Katsina



Five persons have been confirmed dead in a stampede while residents were collecting N500 alms in Katsina state.
Those that lost their lives included four minors and one 40-year-old woman who were collecting “Zakkat” from one Kamal Ma’a Gafi.
However, Police in the state confirmed the incident and said it had arrested Ma’a Gafi, who was giving the alms.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Gambo Isah, also said the incident left 15 persons with injuries.
The tragedy happened when hundreds of the alms seekers gathered at the Rafin Dadi residence of Kamal Ma’a Gafai and began a stampede while struggling to get N500 alms.
 According to DSP Isah, victims from the incident were taken to the General Hospital in the state, treated and discharged.
He said Gafi is currently in Police custody and that investigation into the matter was on.
