Police arrest VIOs for extorting motorcyclists
The Niger State Police Command said it had arrested three Vehicle
Inspection Officers for extorting commercial motorcycle riders in Minna,
the state capital.
It was gathered that the Inspector-General of Police Tactical Squad arrested the suspects, Aliyu Baba, Hashimu Abdullahi and Musa Mohammed in the act.
Northern City News learnt that one Mohammed Yusuf, who claimed he washed cars along T-Junction, Minna was also arrested alongside the VIO officers for allegedly keeping the extorted money for them.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, confirmed the arrest on Thursday.
Elkana said the police operatives recovered N3,690 from the men.
The spokesman said the arrest of VIOs would serve as a lesson to law enforcement agents who might wish to involve themselves in such an act.
“The suspects are a disgrace to the civil service and should be punished to serve as deterrent to others,” he said, adding that the matter was under investigation.
