South Africa Police shot seven suspects dead over station raid
After a group of armed attackers entered the Ngcobo police station on Wednesday and opened fire, three officers were killed at the station. The men stole weapons and by the end of it all, they had killed six officials.
A manhunt quickly got underway for the attackers.
A shootout broke out on Friday evening as police stormed a church in the area. Multiple suspects were hiding in the church as seven were eventually shot dead. According to the Hawks, over 10 suspects were also arrested while others managed to escape.
One police officer was wounded in the shootout and is now recovering in hospital.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi revealed that the church was raided after information emerged on Friday that a possible gang was behind the attack.
The Hawks have also confirmed that they suspect that the group of suspects at the church are part of a cult.
The church which sheltered the attackers is also no stranger to controversy. In 2016, police had to carry out a raid in order to rescue 18 children who were allegedly being prevented from going to school.
Residents then marched in protest as they called for the church to be closed down. Its teachings were described by the SA Council of Churches and ANC as “morally wrong”.
